Experiments with exposures. Mid day, Midtown. Manhattan. Microseconds in transit.

I took long exposures and then pulled the details to bring the underlying stuctures & shapes from what looked like nothing.

I wonder if this is a brief snapshot to how our brains perceive bits of data that’s relaid through our synapses.

—-> I recently found my self within proximity of things I had not known much about. Quickly finding it to be another example of nature & the ways in which it integrates information.
—-> Pearls.
Specifically South Sea & Tahitian pearls.

Pearls seem to have a sort- of- sea- / environmental- test strip -type characteristic. Maybe a variation of rings on a tree? , .. they all can tell stories. We just need to learn their language..
Tides, food, over population, under population, generations, temperature all pass through & leave influence in the growth of pearls individually & collectively.

…Thinking forward. —–+—+–>

⇤ With an sense of mission
All online inquiries ended quietly. Auto-returns were coming back on emails more often than not.
Once on the land, the narrative was equally unexpected.
Store fronts / last known address’ were empty, gone, as if the tide of industry came & went. Phone lines dead or not who it’s supposed to be. Being under the wing of someone who also speaks fluent native tongue didn’t even save us.
Pearls from the area were something that a decade ago was actually being promoted as “come to the farms, tour, talk and possibly purchase.” kind of tourism.

With not even a starting point of contact, the South Sea pearls actually came down to the last 2/3 hours i was in Indonesia (& physically sent weeks later). Literally in the car on the way to the airport .
Before then we eventually did find & return with many grams of fun shaped freshwater pearls. All have a glow that will be great to work with.

South Sea Treasures

It all came to crossing paths with someone whom you’ve seem to have known for awhile. Rekindling & continuing these old unions.

Some things have a pace that we’ve begun to forgotten about.
In times of two day shipping and finding anything and everything through endless possibilities of scrolling on the internet. More often then not it seems to come down to us starting a conversation with new people.
Our stories are powerful.

I’m looking forward to building up (work) to & harmonizing the pearls with silver.

see you soon Bali family

Shifting from painting, water colors & all the other forms of past creativity. I spent the last several weeks building more “future tech”.

—->_ future.tech_ : (N) [?] – prototypes of creations that are there to influence the makers and do-ers of the world. Hopefully those younger than the theorist.

This time : prototype “500block wormhole giga fiber upgrades.”
– a “device” that would allow me to go from the 500 block at 18421 zip code to the 500 block of the 18431 zip code. (a mire 18miles [~30km] from each other )

Dissecting soldering \ hard wiring & pushing the limits of what they say is “buy a roll or 4 of lighting & several packets of FSJEE 2pin connectors to create endless professional results.”

Originally I wanted to buy a “chandelier” pre-made and ready to go. But unsure of the the life span of encapsulated LED’s (as I was just burnt on purchasing a kitchen LED light fixture. A 10year non serviceable fixture burnt out in less than two, I wondered what was the life span of this chandelier ? & CAN I REPLACE COMPONENTS ? ) And for 20% or so more I could buy the supplies with KNOWN higher quality components & assemble / construct something several factors larger myself to shapes formed from Imagination.

[ in hindsight, it was a lot more work. corrections. hacking than expected on initial inquiry. But I don’t think i would re do it in any other way. ..
well maybe with a little less stringent timeline for completion.]

The result was 10 individual & completely re configurable independent led structures. One configuration : sets of 3/4 stacked vertically to make a “chandelier”, the other was a long row 4ft x 12ft [1.25m x 3m] to make a “canopy” of fractal LED’s.

I collect & reuse varieties of salts that interact with my watercolors. Like minded color schemes live on within each other. These remains become the next for future works. We build upon our pasts & those salvaged remains become something they never could have individually on either side of the before or after.

Im excited to share that several new works with you here & will be on display from May 11- June 22 at Bohdi Tree in Honesdale PA/.

These studies turned into a development of pursuit & technical refinement.
With the idea of really focusing on [teqnique].
In this case it was the addition of one step in the what used to be.
that added an unseen level of clarity in the overall piece.

“We just upgraded our perspective lenses.”
I look forward to the works ahead.

These particular pieces are apart of Honesdale’s “Second Saturday” [every 2nd sat of the month —> we come together to take to the streets.
so join us on either May’s second saturday [ may 11th ] or June’s [ june 8th ] between 6pm & 9pm.

This months edition of second saturday lines up with another Honesdale artistic venture_personal_.365day_advert. <TheGreatWallOfHonesdale.

After exploring and wondering through foreign yet familiar places I’m excited to compose new watercolor / gouache works surrounding these natural color compositions… Smaller canvas never found their place among everything, now we work with select papers & technique . leaving canvas’ to a slowly evolving larger format. A form where I can work out a specific dialog that is the equivalent of long format conversation.

I recently spent the month of September in downtown Honesdale, arriving through vacant office space. working on adding some paint to the downtown skyline.
This all came together with the help of Canaltown , The Honesdale Loft, forgotabout K & The Jadwin associates. I’ve wanted to evolve what started on canvas to the public space, and with these people I was able to do so with no constraints, no grants, no scaffold & no machinery. Just neighbors working together because of one’s playing matchmaker, some great onsite support & my extendable paint roller.

——>—–>—> Transport to Honesdale:—————->  ——-> —>

A funny thing happens when you change / merge the direction of traffic through a town. New rules of the road, new routines for foot traffic, less looking both ways before crossing & all of a sudden drivers have less places to look at while passing by. In our case southern facing walls become something now only seen by being on the streets or in our rear view mirrors. Funny thing is there’s a part of our society that hides in these shadowy rear view mirrors. Ones hiding within the darkness of these flowers. Poppy flowers. Opium creators. Things we know and agree on but aren’t talking about. Pharmaceutical formulas & how they behave with us, becoming blanket statements that we need to fine tune. I never want to see these taken from us. Maybe it’s not the plants, but us who are not using them correctly.. .

These are moments I will fight to never forget. It was great to get out of the terracotta castle I work in & spend some time on the rooftops in downtown Honesdale.

Between worlds: lions gate

Nearly four years ago I began a two piece canvas painting at an unprecedented size. 7.ft x 14.ft
Fresh off a single 7ft x 7ft canvas, I wanted to feel what one image spanning two full size canvas’ would end up looking like.
These were uncharted creative waters.

It’s been years of love and confusion on this one,
As you walk around it you visually feel a motion. a pulling
the focusing of an un-rendered end.
Fragmented perceptions  /  layers

There were times these hid behind file cabinets.
Covered with drop cloths for seasons.

With no predisposed endpoint, the pace of development was one about inquisition  /  methods  /  materials  /  & multiple pieces acting as a whole.

aprox 7.ft x 14.ft canvas. [  2[7×7] ]
Aerosol, acrylic, metallic paint, paint pens & ink on 14.oz canvas.

[still tacked on to studio wall  /  un-streched ]

final layer of clear coat was applied August 12th, 2018.
Beginning in and ending within the annual solar cycle of our sun aligning with an even larger star; Sirius. One from the edge of the milky way.
While not knowing much more than a final push to wrap this project up, feels / looks right, and all the planetary thought comes to mind in hindsight.

Hello Honesdale & All,

We’d like to welcome you to run wild with our mobile eye contact canvas. aka box truck.

we’ve uploaded several high resolution scans of “blank eye pages”. These are available to anyone and everyone to take, download, draw on, and share.

At this years Roots and Rhythm
we’ll be downtown Honesdale with a box truck and some oversized eye cut outs. We will be sticking these eyes on the side of the truck and providing black paint pens to whoever would like to participate. The public is welcome to turn the side of the truck into whatever we want; things you see at the festival; things you imagine, ect..
Think of it as an oversized & mobile pencil sketch.

Drawing on a box truck not your thing?  Don’t live in the area, on house arrest, seeing this after the festival & your not fond of time travel ?  Download the .jps, draw on them, bring them, email them, create blueprints for your onsite experience.

We’ll take ones you send in, bring by, and will put together an online compilation of it all.

Where does this all come from ? I [paul] utilize eyes from magazines, and store set of cut out eyes on paper while developing the watercolor characters they will slowly belong to. At one point the storage sheets developed a sort of, underlying connection. With scenes emerging with things working together like i’ve never noticed before. From individual watercolors to interconnected graphite sketches.

Bring your ideas

email your drawings to :

Have ideas outside what was mentioned ?
Always welcome to drop is a line, stop by or say hey.

New mediums.

Over the course of the past year, i’ve slowly been learning and exploring a new medium: Jewelry [ silver ].This came from one of many late night idea building discussions with @forgotaboutk227, this one was about jewelry that featured eyes and our interests | love for them. Looking online and what was available became too generic.
Like many of these, they tend to find you rather than you find them. Not interested in what we came across, the next natural question was ” how can we make them?” As a few seasons ago I was given a unique and cleverly cultivated gift from some loved ones: Silver cuff links made with antique prosthetic eyes. In hindsight this had to be a major catalyst, one that took root awhile ago and only recently broke through the surface.

As it turns out those cuff links were commissioned through my mother [ table jewelry ] is a trained gold smith who works specifically in silver for longer than i’ve been around. While over the years I have done small one off jewelry projects but nothing so involved like these current projects. She has recently been teaching & sharing with me her insights within this medium. It is a slow process and so much more involved than anything i’ve done to date. Yet, it’s something that has a reward quiet possibly unlike anything i’ve done before. Not that everything before hand came easy or bared no rewards, but some things resonate with people differently. After many sessions of polishing, patina, & cleaning you see what once was sheets of silver, and in this case; antique German doll eyes & in the palm of your hand you feel a level of connectivity to the metals that came from the ground and is what it is now because of your shaping.

Working with silver over the last few months, has me re-prioritizing what I’d like to work on going forward. I’m looking forward to creating more within this field from someone so versed, skilled and close to me.

Thank you Honesdale for checking out the one night art liberation.
Thank you @kesley for capturing the evening in a ways I couldn’t describe.
With all honesty forward,
I want to thank David Choe for the “homework” as part of my requirement for coming to experience the Choe show. It was his idea of putting on an art show with the clause of giving it all away in order experience sharing my creations with the world, and those who maybe at the moment couldn’t afford to buy my art.
Putting this together after the fact has me thinking: one of the limited questions asked in the Choe Show application was “what is your greatest wish or desire before you die”. I answered with something along the lines of living off of my creations and sharing them with the world, with the idea of hopefully sparking something artistic with another generation.

The honest part of it being that a good part of me says I should have done this without his instruction. But that may be looking at it in an isolated form, who am I to question his methods, instead I lay down and expose my belly in the most primitive form of trust. I look forward to what lies ahead, what lessons will be learned and experience something from someone whom i’ve admired for awhile in such an intimate form.

hellohonesdale !

I can’t believe it’s been 2 years since we’ve last worked together. Almost to the day. This weekend July 2, 6:30pm – 9:00pm, in an unofficial collaboration with the downtown festivities, I will be having a one night pop up art show.

I’m grateful that The velvet maple is letting me utilize their outdoor storefront to bring you a rather unique, open, & honest approach to sharing my creations with you.

There will be some old, some new & a few in between works available. Alongside my work i will be live painting new pieces on canvas & hanging out for the evening.

there is one catch

leave your money in the car, at home, in your pocket, it has no place here.

come with an open heart and take something home for free.

Factory farming updates (august edition)

So no more than 72-96hrs after finally ending procrastination / documentation (as well as get the aphids under control) we did a routine nutrient change in the hydro system. Maybe it was the surplus of nutrients ? Our meter clocked the nutrient level at 40% lower than optimum levels, & funny because this was the outcome of the directed additions via the label. So we kept adding and checking the ppm (parts per million) until we reached desired #’s. Adjusted the ph & thought we were good. We don’t know what happened, but over the next 3 days the ph just kept rising. Adding acid to lower it was resulting in no change in the climbing ph. Algae was forming ( not something new) so we added normal combating amounts of hydrogen peroxide. The algae subsided but the ph did not. We slowly lost the crop plant by plant, and by the time we salvaged the couple heads of lettuce, they were going soft. The volatility of the ph was always a concern, and it seemed reasonable to check and adjust daily (vs adding upfront cost of a automated controller  ) It remains a delicate process to behave and compensate for soil, but it was a small experiment that once some time frees up we will be doing again. It also was funny to hear about the out of control algae plumes in Florida caused in part by nitrogen based fertilizer going on almost in tandem with our small 9 -10gallon system. Maybe if we all took more of a moment and invested ourselves into cultivating our own food, and dealing with these common threats in-between the sprout to harvest; those plumes wouldn’t have gotten as big? Maybe not, either way it was interesting to see & experience that on a small level and then see what can happen in a several square mile freshwater source.

In the meantime we’ve swapped our veggies for wild flowers. Ditching the hydroponics for now and using pumps/irrigation with soil.

Factory farming updates

Factory farming updates.
Lady bugs vs aphids …
soilless farming my be cleaner, indoors & light weight media, but still much more of a day job than expected.
Automation, ppm (parts per million) meters, & refractometers are our friend, looking forward to writing up more & seeing if growing year round vegetables in the dark proves to be worth it.

With paul’s studio being unfit for the public,
we aimed to recreate the conditions and experiences surrounding the creation of this new body of work.
Simultaneously incorporating digital gateways between the two 500 block locations.
Giving viewers the experience of the studio with less risk of being in the actual studio.

the galleria on main street

Taking things in an uncharted direction, consolidating ideas. a new idea was born.
secluding ourselves within the walls of a derelict and forgotten-about, rust belt factory; located in a small town of 1,500 people on the north east tier of pennsylvania.
we are faced with the challenge of rebuilding an empire.
a building that used to house at least four apartments, employ over a hundred, and acted as a big cog in this mechanism of a town we call Forest City.

“the galleria”
a building within a building. windows that open to nowhere. doorways entombed behind sheetrock.
rooms that have taken years to uncover & discover
a maze that has hypnotized us, in the way a spider lures a fly.
we are now navigating and strengthening this web of a host
sometimes feeling as if the building is navigating our behaviors, like a rook on a possessed chess board.
we’re giving new life to near 100 year old apartments,
honoring their beauty by clear coating the red oak floors,
refreshing the extensive amount detail within the many floors of trim and woodwork.
While simultaneously sledge hammering our way through it all.
you must destroy things sometimes in order to create the next chapter in the story.

The galleria will act as an incubator for storefronts, living and creating.
with the art merchants being digital.
It’s all a experiment on new frontiers,
you don’t need to travel, wash or dress up in order to experience it.
why would you?
when you can directly deal with those involved from the comfort of your chaise lounge.

A peer to peer market place.

not all middle men are created equal, so here we went around all that.

So the “cook book” is completed. Some may say it had taken a turn for the worst, others partook in an ab exercise. It went from one thing to another & snow balled into something else. Rather than tell how to cook, i’d say to leave it up to you. Giving ingredients or items that surprisingly well together. They won’t be told flat out, a bit of a “where’s Waldo” of cookbooks. The whole book is haphazard & was done on the fly, images built from one cut out using things such as illustration markers, white out, paint pens, ball point pen & then scanned into pdf.
. Maybe its a reflection to what passes as “food” today.

Im currently having trouble uploading it in a way they allows you to see it in a book manor rather than a list of pages. If interested drop me a line in an email & i can send the file. Im still working this out, but with the warmer weather & slew of ideas its a challenge to get to.

Newspaper & *updates 2-6-12

Updated, now with article.

It’s been cold & fast paced, with temps too cold things like this happen :

Working on a free downloadable cook book built from various cooking magazines, online articles, brewers, and self imposed experiments , on ways to eat like a king for near drive through prices..  I can’t take credit for these recipes as not all are my own, but just a new take on ways to eat & live. Information that betters the lives of those that listen should be free. The due date should be the end of February. Hoping to make it mobile friendly.

Scranton alleyway 10-15-11

The 1000+sqft mural for 119 productions in downtown scranton is finally finished.
nearly 8 gallons of paint,8-9 cases of aerosol, a month + of labor & working from sunset to sunrise, a constant supply of home cooked meals, record breaking rainfall, earth quakes, historic flooding & good times.

Will post pictures in “field grown” gallery when im able to get clear photos.

Mediaing

Corruption, murder, & scandal take a front page break. (Not that these guys report on that stuff daily).
The write up was provoked by the Scranton Alleyway project..

Go Lackawanna is an independent local paper in Scranton P.A. One of the few (if not only ones) you can pick up for free.

I used to think the media was all about things that were I. Negative.  II. Irrelevant to your goals. III. Out of your control & VI. Time consuming. But is seems their are still people out their writing coherent & perspective challenging work.

Prerequisite. 7-28-11

So it seems my “made in America” image  has evoked some emotion & copious hate mail.

Let me set some things straight.
Art is supposed to be controversial, I didn’t pursue art full time
to bend to the likes & dislikes of everyone else.

The motive for “made in America” was not that I’m an anarchist,
or anti-American. We host great opportunities, from our social freedoms to
our beer making freedom (in some countries, you have to follow certain recipes and protocols, to be allowed to call it beer)
The drawing is to show that basically in this country we only produce crap.
50 years ago we made everything from clothes hangers, fans, jars, hell even scissors were made here, it was
hard to find something that wasn’t made in the U.S.
You know what the largest export to china in 2010 was? Paper waste & scrap metal.

Growing up & still working in a small family manufacturing business,
(that started out in a garage & today still only employs a hand full of people)
That is a slap in the face.
Nothing of value seems to be made here anymore.
You know where the majority of the U.S defense components are manufactured?
China.
Did you know that our hypodermic needles are being manufactured in china?
Think of that the next time your getting an immunization.
Did you know that Wal-Mart has been known to sell U.S flags, Made in china?

Im not saying china should be producing nothing, they are a major a super power in the
global economy, the U.S. and the rest of the world needs them to function.
But really, major components to our military helicopters should not be
outsourced, our flags should not be made in another country.
No countries flag should be made outside that country then imported to be sold.

We shouldn’t have American companies sending their American employees to foreign countries
to train their counterparts, so that when they return to U.S soil they can be laid off.
Capitalism has turned into something that rewards such behavior.
Our very fundamentals are the ones that are destroying us, are we just
a giant oxymoron?

So its not me saying America is “crap”, its our policies, and our current way of life
that is turning us into nothing but producers of crap.

Hello
